Teaching high school freshmen can be an adventure. In this session, teachers of freshmen at different levels (College Prep, AP, and IB) will share some ideas about what works well in their classrooms and what pitfalls they seek to avoid. They will also provide specific prompts to lead group discussions about what works well in other classrooms so that we can all spend time learning from each other. Come prepared to do a little venting, a lot of problem solving, and be ready to share your secrets for teaching among the chaos of ninth graders. Note: phrases such as "6-7" and "skibidi" will not be tolerated in this session.

Don't just teach what happened. Take your students back in time to the tough choices that people had to make in World History. Was it rational for hunter-gatherers to begin storing food? For the Inca to build roads? For Louis XVI to support the American War for Independence? This session will show you how to cover lots of SOL content by using economic decision-making models; real-world scenarios; AI tools; and inquiry questions. When students use SOL content as evidence in their arguments, you both cover a lot of content and make an authentic learning experience.
